JOB SUMMARY

The Childcare Group Assistant will work closely with the Childcare Group Teacher in conducting daily duties such as preparing and serving meals, changing diapers, helping with toileting, writing daily reports, recording attendance, engaging in play, assisting to put children to sleep and creating a safe environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensure the room, furniture and items in the room have been cleaned and sanitized per the Center of Disease Control (CDC) and Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) guidelines and that the information has been documented.

  • Children arriving or showing signs of becoming ill during the day will be taken to the Nurses Office immediately.

  • Depending on the age of the children in the room, structure an appropriate schedule of experience’s in the classroom using large group, small group, as well as independent opportunities.

  • Provide the children adequate exercise, play and rest throughout the day.

  • Ensure the children are eating a healthy snack and meal if in care more than 4 hours.

  • Teach children to follow the rules and procedures in the classroom and building.

  • Monitor the behaviors of the children and communicates all progress and concerns with the Childcare Group Teacher.

  • Build and maintain a positive relationship with the parents/guardians.

  • Maintain required paperwork regarding attendance, incident reports, medication administration, accident reports, and other necessary records in a timely manner.

  • Maintain minimum OCFS training hours of 30 hours every two years, 15 hours completed within first 6 months of employment, in topic and subject matters set forth in 418-1.14(d) of the regulations.

  • Maintain Medication Administration Training.

  • Be aware of each child’s special health care needs identified in the child’s individual health care plan.

  • Assist children in keeping clean and comfortable and in learning appropriate personal hygiene practices such as washing hands thoroughly with soap and running water consistently throughout the day.

  • Maintain a positive relationship with the children and encourages the children to do the same on a daily basis.

  • Meet the emotional, social, physical needs of each child.

  • Report any suspect abuse to Childcare Coordinator, Principal, RN, or Administration and call Child Protective Services if advised.

  • Arrange a classroom environment in accordance to program regulations and policies.

  • Keep all appropriate records such as attendance, goals and daily notable comments.

  • Support other Daycare staff when needed.

  • Practices in accordance to agency standards and professional conduct and ethics by respecting confidentiality of the children and family information as well as demonstrating effective problem solving and decision-making abilities in conjunction with other team members.

  • Perform such other duties as delegated by Administration. (may not be essential)

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or its equivalent, and one year of experience working with children less than 13 years of age.

  • Trained in CPR/First Aid and maintained according to Red Cross standards.

  • Clearance from Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) which includes NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Statewide Central Register Database Check and NYS Justice Center.

  • Ability to provide documentation demonstrating that you are able to legally perform work in the United States.

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to work effectively with children who may or may not have varying disabilities as well as families and agency staff.

  • The employee demonstrates basic knowledge of human growth and development and is able to apply that knowledge in a holistic manner when planning educational programming for children.

  • The employee displays understanding of the roles and responsibilities of all other staff, demonstrating effective problem solving and decision-making abilities in collaboration with the other team members and administration.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with staff members and administration.

  • Knowledge of effective learning environment, classroom organization
    and management techniques.

  • Will successfully complete required training courses.

  • Ability to work effectively with parents/guardians, agency staff and community agencies.

  • Multicultural awareness and respect for all people in accordance with agency standards, professional conduct and ethics.
